How Does Technology Help Students in P.E

For quite some time educators have been trying to incorporate technology into the Physical Education Curriculum. With the advancement of computers and gaming technology it is now possible to have students incorporate activities like Dance Dance Revolution into school activities. Do you think Technology in the classroom has and impact reducing child obesity?

  1. I don't believe technology is helping childhood obesity aside from food I think it is the second leading cause of obesity in our country. When I was a kid growing up we didn't have video games, computers and I actually remember having a television without a remote control. My time and day after school was spent out doors playing tag, hop scotch, jumping rope and riding my bike. I think these activities kept me in shape and today kids are indoors spending the majority of their time playing video games or socializing on the computer. Don't take this personal since you are Physical Ed teacher but I think your subject is one subject that doesn't really need technology. I think the traditional method of running on around the track, playing soccer and basketball etc. is the way to fight obesity.

  2. I do agree with you as far as playing games outdoors. i was the same way, we didnt have internet or all these games to play. I had a bunch of kids that lived in my neighbhorhood, so we would play games constantly in the circle at the end of out street. but times have changed and kids aren't doing that as much. It's tough to get kids to participate in phys ed class at the older level. the Education field hasn't adapted as fast as society to technology. Not all schools have the funding for this, but our school got a grant to incorporate technology into our curriculum. We have excercise bikes hooked up to playstations where kids have to pedal to activitate the game. It's actually really cool and i've tried it. You are getting work out playing the game. Because you are so focused in the game you don't realize how you are raising your HR. there are so many other ways technology has been incorporated in P.E. But we are steering away from the traditional method that you talked about of team sports. It is about introducing students to a way of lifetime approach that they can use throughout their life.

  3. I definitely think technology can help with child obesity. I believe games such as Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) and especially the Wii will have a positive effect. It would be great if teachers would be able to use these as a positive in their class... budget is always the issue!
    Best of luck!

  4. I would have to agree the technology can help with child obestity but on the flip side it can cause childhood obestity. Wii is an excellant way to get students off the couch however, we have to keep them motivated in that type of technology and keep improving. Children get bored with something very quickly now days.

  5. Technology in physical education is coming. I have seen some really neat things happening. I am only in my mid 20's so I was even able to see some really neat things happening. For example, I was on the golf team when I went to high school. We had an indoor "driving range." It was one tee with a digital mat that took a lot of stats. It was really neat.
